Previous | Home | NextPlaque in Birger Jarls torn (tower). Gustav Vasa (Gustav I, 1496-1560, King of Sweden 1523-1560) in the 1520s built a 'Gun Tower' on the northern end of the fortress wall. The top was castellated and shooting slots lined the walls. At that time the fortress was on the water's edge but because of land fill-ins now is farther from the water's edge. Since then there have been many modifications and remodelings. The tower has been used for various purposes, including a pawnshop and city archives. Today the tower is named after Birger Jarls, the reputed founder of Stockholm around 1250. The tower is a designated landmark.
